Lakin Starling is a Philadelphia raised and Brooklyn-based journalist, music curator, and creative writer.
With interests in music, identity, tv/film, and wellness, Lakin uses her voice to highlight cultural conversations that are created within those realms. Her work often takes form in intimate profiles, interviews (both in-print and video) and critical essays.
Lakin also has experience in using her storytelling skills to pitch and create and/or co-produce video franchises and ideas.
In 2015, Lakin began her role as a fellow and then staff writer and editorial- video lead at The FADER. While there, she wrote the impactful October 2017 cover story on R&B singer, Kelela. Since 2018 as a full-time freelancer, she’s written for platforms like Pitchfork, Esquire, Dazed, Buzzfeed Reader, Vulture, SSENSE, VIBE, Okayplayer, and Rap Caviar. Lakin has also worked with Vevo as an on-camera host.
In addition to writing features and essays, she’s expanding her skills with roles as a playlist curator at SoundCloud (AURAS), editorial video writer at Red Bull Music, and an editorial writer for Netflix’s Strong Black Lead social channel.
Her zine of original poems and pieces titled, When the Veil is Thin will be released in 2019.
